"Thank you to all the voters, volunteers, contributors, supporters, family and friends for all you did to help me get elected and to allow me to have the chance to serve in the Minneapolis School Board. We won the election after a lot of hard work and we were all part of a historic election. Our urgent voice for Minneapolis kids was heard loud and clear and I will not rest until we fulfill our potential as a school district. Congratulations to Richard Mammen, Rebecca Gagnon, Hussein Samatar and Jenny Arneson on their election to the Minneapolis Board of Education. I look forward to serving with them together with Carla Bates, Jill Davis and Lydia Lee, and work together to make sure that every child in Minneapolis reaches their full potential regardless of their zip code or family situation, that we bring stability to our school district and improve our relationship with our employees."

Alberto Monserrate for Minneapolis School Board

As a teenager growing up in San Juan, Puerto Rico, my life was changed by personal heroes - the principal who took personal time to tutor me and make sure I got into college, my 10th grade history teacher who turned me from a kid who hated history into a history lover who eventually minored in it, and my school counselor who urged me to not settle for a dead-end job washing dishes and convinced me to pursue a college degree. They went way above and beyond to make sure I had a productive future.

Now it’s my turn to give back. I am running for the School Board and today I ask for your support to make that happen.

I’m running for the School Board because I believe I can make a difference. I’ll bring to the position my leadership, my ability to be a new voice for many of the underrepresented, and my experience as a communicator to help ensure that every child gets an equal opportunity to realize their dreams and reach their goals. All of our kids need to get the education they deserve. I will work tirelessly to ensure that our public school system is strong and stable so we can accomplish these goals.

I have been involved as a volunteer in many education-related roles for over 15 years. I helped open public schools, I served as a parent representative in key Minnesota Department of Education committees dealing with state and federal policy, I helped make recommendations to President Obama’s Race to the Top application for federal funds, and I contributed to the development of MPS’s current strategic plan.

As a parent to Carlos 15, and Alycia 13 both public school students, I feel a sense of urgency to help make the necessary changes that our kids so desperately need.

Today you have a chance to help shape the future direction of Minneapolis public schools (MPS) and to influence the lives of thousands of children. It would be an honor for me to earn your support.
